Data Recovery Wizard
lives up to its name
by Frank Bollinger, ORCOPUG
I was viewing a friend's camera memory card on my laptop
PC recently when the card suddenly became unreadable.
The story had a happy ending when the Data Recovery
Wizard (DRW) from www.easeus.com successfully recov-
ered the photos, but it took a couple days of troubleshooting
and the lessons learned are worth sharing. Here's the story:
As part of a group project in a photography class, I was
organizing photos taken by the other team members. I had
just finished viewing a teammate's SD card on my laptop
and tried to copy the appropriate photos. At this point, the
computer would no longer read the card. Instead, it dis-
played a message saying the card needed to be formatted
before use. Since you should never format a camera mem-
ory card in a computer and formatting erases (logically if
not physically) the contents, that would have been the worst
action to take.
I next tried reading the card in two other computers, with
similar results. After some investigation using Windows
utilities (If interested: Control Panel System and Security
– Administrative Tools Computer Management – Disk
Management in Windows 8), I discovered that the SD card
had a File System of RAW.” Normally, it should be
FAT32 or, possibly, NTFS.
In this context, RAW has nothing to do with RAW photos.
Instead, it means there is no recognizable file organization
on a drive (such as hard drives, flash drives, and memory
cards). As a result, the computer cannot identify any files
on the drive. I hadn't done anything unusual, simply view-
ing and attempting to copy some of the photos from the
card. But, here I was, having possibly destroyed my friend's
SD card and lost her photos.
Thanks to the Internet, I could see that this problem has
occurred before and there are software products that claim
to fix it. I tried three of them. One didn't work at all. An-
other spent some time crunching the card, then asked for
payment before displaying the results. I decided to keep
looking and found DRW. There were online ratings ranging
from delighted to disappointed. However, easeus.com had
been mentioned favorably in a technical publication I read,
so I downloaded DRW and gave it a try. DRW was easy to
use and appears to have recovered the files completely.
You can recover up to 2 GB of files for free. Beyond that,
you are expected to purchase the program for $69.95. I've
seen problems like this twice before and was unable to re-
cover any files either time. I'm delighted, and relieved, that
DRW worked so well and will be buying it the next time I
encounter a problem like this.
